Cleaning house is not one of my favorite chores. I do however enjoy the aftermath when everything is in its place and I can sit and enjoy it. The scent of freshly cleaned floors and laundry put away can actually lift my spirits.
What about our spiritual house? Scripture says, “But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us.” (2 Cor. 4:7) ESV. That treasure within us is the light of Christ.
What happens when we forget to do spiritual house cleaning? It is very much like neglecting our physical home. When papers, clothes and dishes stack up, we have a difficult time functioning. When unconfessed sin and other things begin to stack up in our spiritual life, we become overwhelmed and soon forget the joy of our salvation.
I have learned to do a little housekeeping daily, as it helps me to stay on top of things in the home front. It is the same with my spiritual house, this jar of clay. I need to keep the clutter of sin out so that I can hear from God more clearly. It takes practice and resolve. No one becomes the perfect homemaker overnight. It is the same with our spiritual house, also known as the temple of God. We must regularly keep things in check.
