Jonah had no idea when he fled from the command of God, that he would eventually become fish food…or whale food to be more specific. Many of us complain about our troubles and adversities, but REALLY, have you ever been swallowed by a whale and lived to tell about it?
What Jonah said after being discovered asleep, while the crew faced a terrifying storm sounds familiar. He answered, “I am a Hebrew and I worship the Lord, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land.” Jonah 1:9 NIV.
I guess we can say that he realized his goose was cooked, or his fish was fried. Whatever, he admitted that he was the problem for their predicament and requested to be tossed overboard. Maybe he hoped it would be the end of God telling him what to do…but as the story progresses we find him very much alive in the belly of a whale, crying out for life!!! The good news is that God heard…and God delivered him. Jonah was willing to sacrifice his life for the others on board. However, God says, “To obey is better than sacrifice….” (1 Sam. 15:22).
