“The third time He said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter affirmed his love all three times, and “Jesus said to him, “Tend my sheep”” John 21:17 NIV.
Remember, it had only been a matter of days since Peter had denied (three times) even knowing Christ. Poor Peter. He sure gets a bad rap for his ill behavior but are we any different? How about looking at something lude, laughing at a crude joke, cheating on our spouse or telling a lie. All of these actions are no better than Peter who denied Jesus.
Do we clam up if our open love for Jesus may bring about unwanted consequences? Have you ever done something so bad towards a family member or friend that would make them question your love or devotion to them? Jesus knew Peter loved Him, and His love never wavered toward his disciple. He never once mentioned Peters’ denial issue. I do not find it surprising that Peter later on pens, “Above all, keep fervent in your love for one another, because love covers a multitude of sins.” 1 Peter 4:8 NAS.
