Don’t you find it odd how we get all fired up at the beginning of a New Year to eat better, exercise more, spend more time in the Word, be a better parent, etc.? What is it about a New Year that gives us hope and courage? I suppose it is the same emotions we experience when we come to Christ. We realize we get a second chance to make things right. We take on a new life and become a new creature in Him, for old things have passed away, and behold all things have become new!
Why does it take a New Year, for some folks to remind themselves the way they ought to behave, talk, or walk? “Whoever says he abides in Him ought to walk in the same way in which He walked.” (1 John 2:7). Did Jesus come to a New Year and say, I am going to connect better with God my Father, eat right, and take care of my body? I doubt it. Mainly because he made that commitment early on to walk in the footsteps of God, as His Son, equal to God.
As the New Year rolls around, our same old New Year resolutions reveal a lot about us. Perhaps we are talking about our resolve more than walking in the way He walked. Let’s learn from our past mistakes, so when the next year rolls around, we can do greater exploits for God!
