“We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ….,” (2 Corinthians 10:5) NAS
Have you ever been approached by someone who came a bit too close, got a smidgen too personal, or just flat out took up your personal space? I have, and it can become very uncomfortable. In fact, sometimes when people step into our space we instantly become defensive, and maybe after a while, bitter, resentful and eventually unforgiving. This is what someone else’s violation can do to us. What about the times that we have allowed their violation(s) to bring upon us stagnation?
Frozen In Time
When we have been taken advantage of, it is easy to grumble, complain and possibly desire to retaliate. What happens to us as we continue to gnaw on that thing that has upset us through and through? I’ll tell you; we become withdrawn, unavailable to others, closed up, unforgiving, crabby,
and useless for the Kingdom. We have become precisely what the enemy intended. As I counsel people, I find on a regular basis that they have been tripped up by something that occurred way back in their past, and because they have not released it or been delivered from the effects of it, they have lived out days, weeks, months, years and decades harboring guilt, resentment and intolerance towards the individual(s) responsible. They might as well have been frozen in time, because, since that moment, they have realized no true victories in their life.
Suffering NOT So Silently
Those who are harboring offense towards someone else, invariably have problems with other people in their lives. They are far less transparent when it comes to relationships, and they
are willing to give up too easily when it comes to any form of challenge presented. They live in fear, always wondering when the next person is going to come along and pour salt into their already opened wounds. They cause friction among the brethren and have wild imaginations, living outside the submission of Christ. Eventually, they begin to think that everyone is against them, even God. Scientist and Physicians agree that those carrying offense often experience infirmity, obesity, and other disease. Humility is far from them, and often you will witness their mean-spirited attitude or abrasiveness towards others in a room. If not dealt with, they not only damage themselves, but inflict wounds on all those around them.
What’s The Answer When It Comes to Offense?
One word-----forgiveness. When we allow ourselves to forgive the person who has offended us, we are immediately set free from all of those private conversations in our mind of how we are going to get that person back. We are able, through the power of the Holy Spirit, to take every thought captive as our focus passage declares.
Many times, right before I am getting ready to do great exploits for God, deliver a powerful message, or set out to do Heaven’s call on my life, I will discover someone in my way trying to cause offense. Offense is how the enemy sidetracks, distracts, and side-slaps us.
Without forgiveness, you place the handcuffs or chains on the wrists of your own life and hide the key. You see, the person who caused the offense continues to move on with their lives, never looking back at the fallout. They don’t hold the key to your freedom or your deliverance. Only
you do, and it will take God to help you find it again!
Let it go dear one. If you have been harboring an offense, then you have also missed out on what God has for you in this life. There is no hope, no help, or peace until you relinquish your “right” to hold on to your offense. Once released, you will experience true joy, peace, patience, understanding, kindness and gentleness.
