As a teenager, I endured quite a heartache when my older brother was killed and then three days later my mother shot my dad then herself. It was definitely not something anyone could have prepared for. During the funeral, I remember now the one verse that meant very little to me then, but now has encompassed my life. “My grace is sufficient for you…….” (2 Corinthians 12:9)
God’s Sovereign Grace Reflects His Very Character
Many years have passed since that very sad, confused and terrible season of my life. I have had many more ups and downs, and challenges and opportunities to depend upon God’s grace through the years. The sovereignty of God allows believers to understand that He is always in control and that nothing that comes our way, good or bad, has permission to do so without first
being filtered through His loving care for us. (Romans 11:36; 1 Corinthians 8:6).
Many believers are yet to understand why hardship in their lives proves God’s loving care towards them. Let me just say, without the fire, there would be no gold, and through our trials, God says that our faith is more valuable than gold. When we experience the dynamic duo of God’s sovereignty coupled with His grace, (an unmerited favor from God), we begin to understand the very core character of God’s nature. The very reason that we are saved is because of God’s grace because, without His grace, there is no opportunity of salvation. “For by grace are you saved through faith” (Ephesians 2:8)
Why Sovereign Grace for Believers?
Some may question as to why God bestows His sovereign grace on believers? I can assure you that it is NOT because we deserve the gift of salvation, but only as to demonstrate "the riches of His glory" (Romans 9:14-23). That grace is still available today to all, and to any who dare to trust God with their lives. A life in control of God’s sovereign grace is not easy, but the one thing that we can always depend upon is that He will never leave us or forsake us.
When Our Dreams Are Shattered
As a young girl my dreams for life, as I knew them back then, were shattered. If not for God’s sovereign grace to guide, save, lead, direct, heal, promise, defend, uphold, encourage, love and provide for me, I would be very afraid of what my future had to hold. You see, the glue of God’s grace has been the only thing that has been able to hold me together when everything around me
seemingly falls apart. Anyone outside the sovereign grace of God has a reason to fear. Don’t stay outside from love of the Father. It is only through His grace and sovereignty that we can overcome this world.
Jesus said, “These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you
have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world." (John 16:33)
