Today, as I have been studying the Moses passage and all of the great deeds that were performed through the hand of God for His people, I have realized a very profound truth. Perhaps I have known it before, but a gentle reminder is needed on a constant basis for all of us when it comes to living in His Presence. So I wish to ask you this one question, “Do you hunger for the Presence of God?”
Moses knew that without experiencing the Presence of God leading His children to the Promised Land, that he would be bankrupt in every way. That is why Moses said, “If Your Presence does not go with us, do not send us from here. How will anyone know that you are pleased with me or your people if you do not go with us? What else will distinguish me and your people from the other people on the face of the earth? (Exodus 33:15-16).
Did you catch that? The distinguishing mark between us and the rest of the people in the world is the Presence of GOD! On this side of the cross, and the infilling of the Holy Spirit, we can walk in His Presence daily, hourly and minute by minute. Fact is; not many of us take advantage of such an opportunity. On the contrary, many in the church today seek out God only when they are in need or in trouble. He has become an instant fix instead of a constant Protector and Helper in their everyday lives.
In Moses’ day, God’s Presence was in a cloud by day and fire by night. This was a constant reassurance to the Israelites that God was leading them just where He wanted them to go. Today, we have the Holy Spirit leading and protecting us. However, we must have ears to hear what the Spirit is saying. I spent a good part of my Christian life hoping to hear from God, and hoping that I was walking in His ways. I can now KNOW that I hear from Him, and I can also understand the way in which He leads more quickly. It took perseverance, brokenness, willingness and a contrite heart to develop that kind of relationship with Him. It did not happen overnight. I had strumbled a lot along the way before I came to the conclusion that falling down was not an alternative. I have set my eyes on the race of FAITH, and I have stayed there strongly over the past few decades of my life.
We Will Experience Earthly Loss While Seeking His Presence
When we hunger for His presence, we can expect to lose friends, family and others along the way. Those of you who have known me for several years have witnessed and declared that there has been a drastic turnaround in my life. My hunger for God’s presence goes with me into the marketplace, into the dry places where people need Him the most. I have lost family, and friends that I loved dearly because I refuse to put them above the Presence of God in my life. Jesus said, “Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.” (Matt. 10:37)
So, with that being said, it all comes down to a condition of the heart, doesn’t it? When the things of this world are more attractive to us than the One WHO made the world, we know that we are in trouble. My prayer for you today is that you will develop a passion, a hunger and thirst for God and His WORD as never before. Let us all remember that without His Presence, we will miss out on the greatest opportunity offered to believers. For His promise says,
“You will make known to me the path of life; In Your Presence is fullness of joy; In Your right hand there are pleasures forever.” (Psalm 16:11)
